When people ask me about my Paleo way of eating and I give the simplistic reply of ‘Caveman eating, i.e. NO PROCESSED FOOD’, the first question that tends to follow is ‘How do you manage to do it, like what do you eat when you need something quick or in work!?’.
Well guess what, along with prepared meals I also eat frozen ready meals. Frozen ready meals made by me, all healthy and nutritious with no added chemicals! WOOOP WOOOP!
If you don’t prepare yourself you will always fail.
This motto was drummed into my brain by my maths teach in school, obviously I hated and thought it was ‘the stupidest saying ever’ as I was in my prime teenage bitch days but now that I am semi mature I finally get what he was saying. Well not everything, I still do not get Pythagoras theory but that’s a whole other issue!
So, my week tends to be pretty hectic. I leave for work at 7am and more often than not don’t get home from work until around 6-7 pm, I am a major fan of my amazing heaven sent cloud like bed so I aim to be in bed before the clock strikes 10pm (MOVE OVER CINDERELLA!). So that pretty much leaves me 3 hours to work out, shower, eat and prepare for the next day…
Given that I eat around 5 small meals a day, a girl has to be prepared – especially if you seen the goings on in my work canteen!
I have begun a routine to help with this, I now spend around 2-3 hours on a Sunday locked in the kitchen with Arctic Monkeys on full blast creating a whirl wind with food.
Exhibit A: This is my weekly haul from a local charity run farmers shop. All my fresh and organic fruit and veg grown within my local area…
Exhibit B: 3 hours work in the kitchen, this is a selection go what i made ready for the week… Exhibit C: My list of food that I make and fridge/freeze to feed myself, another human and a cocker spaniel through a week or so… I bag these up as meals for one, sometimes we eat at different times or more often don’t want to eat the same meal. However, if you are cooking for a family you could freeze this as a whole family meal.
6 x Turkey Chilli Con Carne
4 x Beef Bolognese
6 x Sweet Potato Sheppard’s pie
1 x Roast chicken (for salads)
4 x Spinach, beet, apple, ginger and coconut milk smoothie bag
4x Spinach, banana, pineapple, and flax seed smoothie bag
4 x Kale, berries, kiwi, avocado and chai seed smoothie bag
Lots and Lots of Raw energy protein balls
Yes this is dramatic, yes this takes a lot of time and yes this is hard work having to be so prepared. However I do believe that there are a lot of benefits;
- I have always got food ready to go, no waiting around for food to cook
- I know exactly what food I am eating, I even know the macro nutrients as I work them out for each meal
- My kitchen is only messed up once, after that its only my bowl to wash through the week (MAJOR BONUS)
- Economies of scale! Peoples biggest worry is the cost of the fresh food when eating Paleo, I now bulk buy and freeze meaning a costs savings and a lot less wastage of food
So, stop making it hard for yourself. Give yourself a few hours a week and get yourself prepared. I promise it is worth it! I will work through the meals above and share my recipe’s, they are all simple and easy to make AND OBVIOUSLY DELICIOUS AND PALEO!
Do any of you prepare in this way?
